Planetary gearbox vs. Spur gearbox technology | Delta Line

Planetary and Spur gearboxes

Planetary gearbox advantages:

- compact size
- high efficiency
- low backlash
- high torque to weight ratio

Spur gearbox advantages:

- simple design and less expensive
- best for low-torque and low-speed applications

A gearbox is a set of gears that can be added to a motor to drastically decrease speed and/or increase torque.

Planetary gearboxes:
A planetary gearbox is a gearbox with the input shaft and the output shaft aligned. This type of gearbox is used to transfer the largest torque in the most compact form (known as torque density).

The planetary gearbox got its name because of how the different gears move together. In a planetary gearbox we see a sun (solar) gear, satellite (ring) gear and two or more planet gears.

Planetary gearboxes

In Planetary gearboxes the input shaft and the output shaft aligned. Their design offers advantages such as robustness to sustain intermittent or sudden load changes, and are ideally suited for precise positioning applications.

Spur gearboxes

A Spur gearhead’s construction consists of larger gears that mesh with smaller gears. The gears are mounted on parallel shafts, but offset from one another.
